ESL Community Building Activities: Identity Constellation & Language Map

Two complete 45-minute lessons that let grades 6–12 multilingual learners introduce themselves on their own terms — with private thinking, real choice, and the right to pass built into every step.

The two-lesson sequence

Lesson 1 — Identity Constellation (45 minutes, 23 slides). Students build a constellation of the parts of themselves they choose to show — languages, places, people, interests — with one star they are allowed to keep private and never explain. Visual model first, then private drafting, then partner rehearsal, then optional sharing.

Lesson 2 — My Language Map (45 minutes, 19 slides). Students map the languages they use onto a blank body outline and explain the meaning themselves. The placement is a metaphor the student chooses, not a claim about where language lives. Sentence frames and an optional legend keep the writing accessible at WIDA 2–3.

Privacy, choice, and the right to pass

  • The right to pass. Students can decline any prompt without giving a reason.
  • Private thinking first. Every task starts silently, on paper, before anything is said aloud.
  • No cold calling. Sharing is volunteer-based, and partner rehearsal comes first.
  • Student-controlled disclosure. Students may generalize, fictionalize, use symbols, or answer in any language they use.

Frequently asked questions

What grade levels and language levels is this for?

Grades 6–12 multilingual learners, approximately WIDA levels 2–3. Newcomer, emerging, and developing support options are built into both lessons.

How long does it take to teach?

Two complete 45-minute lessons. They can be taught on consecutive days or split across a week.

Do students have to share personal information?

No. Students choose what to include and may generalize, fictionalize, use symbols, or keep an element private. Sharing is volunteer-based and there is no cold calling.

Can students respond in a language other than English?

Yes. Any language a student uses is valid in both lessons, and symbols or drawings are accepted responses.

Is anything editable?

Yes — 20 handout slides are editable. Printable PDFs, a teacher guide, and a blank body outline are also included.

Is this the same as the First Week ESL Bell Ringers?

No. This is a separate premium resource. The bell ringers are short daily warm-up routines; these are two full community-building lessons.
