Compare — Side by Side, Fairly
Two cases. Fair categories. Balanced evidence. No verdict.
The Compare arc trains multilingual learners to hold two people, objects, events, or short text-evidence sets side by side and analyze what changes and what stays the same. Students first choose fair comparison categories and gather balanced evidence from two related short texts, then investigate comparison language (both, also, similarly, likewise, in contrast, however, whereas, while, unlike, same as, different from, comparative -er/more … than) with a controlled clause-structure card, and finally synthesize both evidence sets into a neutral 6–8 sentence comparative paragraph with a clear organizing principle. Compare stops at balanced analysis — hedged claims are Qualify, taking a position with a counterclaim is Argue, and turning a case into a story is Narrate.
Learning goal
Students can read two related short texts, choose fair comparison categories, gather balanced evidence from both, and write a neutral 6–8 sentence comparative paragraph that uses at least two different comparison structures and does not deliver an unsupported judgment.
Who it is for
Intermediate ESL/ELD (grades 6–12). Best taught after Explain Causes, so students already read for meaning, reread as language detectives, and cite evidence by number before they hold two evidence sets side by side.
Progression
- CP-01 chooses fair comparison categories and gathers balanced evidence-based similarities and differences from two related short texts.
- CP-02 investigates comparison language and moves through controlled → guided → free practice with both/also/similarly, in contrast/however/whereas/while, unlike, and comparative -er/more … than.
- CP-03 synthesizes both evidence sets into a neutral 6–8 sentence comparative paragraph with a clear organizing principle (point-by-point or block) and no unsupported judgment.
What is included
This arc is currently in early release. Full lesson pages (purpose, paired case texts, two-pass routine, guided practice, exit check, arc performance task with student dossier and rubric) are published on the site. A packaged slide deck and printable student packet are not available yet and are not implied anywhere in the UI.

- CP-01 · Fair Categories and Balanced Evidence — Students read a short paired text about two school gardens (Lincoln High and Riverside Middle), draft candidate comparison categories, drop any category the evidence cannot support on both sides, and complete a side-by-side evidence table with citations for every cell.
- CP-02 · The Language of Similarity and Difference — Students take fair categories from a short paired text about two bus routes and move through controlled → guided → free practice with a small comparison-language set, checking each sentence against a clause-structure and punctuation card.
- CP-03 · The Neutral Side-by-Side Paragraph — Students take a paired dossier about two after-school programs, choose an organizing principle (point-by-point or block), and write a neutral 6–8 sentence comparative paragraph that keeps evidence balanced across categories, uses accurate comparison language, and stops before over-claiming.
